Research & Innovation

SJLDC · Research & Innovation

Research that ends in a working prototype, not just a paper.

We pair university students and academics with real commercial problems. SJLDC sets the direction, manages the project and owns the commercial roadmap; the university brings research rigour and multidisciplinary talent. The output has to stand up in both worlds — a defensible literature review and architecture, and a prototype you can hold in your hand.

From idea to prototype: literature, architecture and ethics on one side; device, app and AI coach on the other

Flagship project · with the University of South Wales

Smart Vape Puff Control System

A behaviour-change AI engine that helps people cut down on vaping. A sensor-equipped device detects each puff, a mobile wellbeing app shows the pattern, and an AI coaching backend nudges the user at the moments that matter — learning from their behaviour rather than lecturing them.

Smart Vape Puff Control System: smart device, mobile app, AI coaching and behaviour change, with a feedback loop

What it is

  • Connected hardware: sensors on a Raspberry Pi controller, talking to the phone over Bluetooth
  • A mobile wellbeing app that tracks puff events and progress in real time
  • An AI coaching backend that personalises nudges and predicts risk moments
  • Privacy and accessibility built in from day one: GDPR impact assessment, WCAG 2.1

How it’s being built

  • Phase 1 — Research & design. Literature review, full system architecture, UX wireframes, AI model justification and a data protection impact assessment.
  • Phase 2 — Working prototype. Live device-to-app connectivity, the cloud backend and the AI coach, demonstrated end to end.
  • Beyond. A commercial roadmap towards wider deployment, including a potential NHS pathway.

Students from computing, engineering, AI and health disciplines do the research and the building. SJLDC provides project leadership, industry supervision and the commercial lens.

How a partnership works

Three steps: a real problem, a structured programme, two outputs. SJLDC leads; the university brings research rigour

1. A real problem

We start from a commercial or public-sector need — not a topic looking for an application.

2. A structured programme

Defined phases, student roles, milestones and a budget, so it can sit inside a university module or a funded project.

3. Two outputs

Academic: documentation that meets assessment and ethics standards. Commercial: a prototype and a roadmap to take it further.

Where we can help

Research areas: health and behaviour change, forecasting and data, trusted digital learning

Health & behaviour change

Connected devices and AI coaching for habits people want to change.

Forecasting & data

Predictive models where getting the data pipeline and the evaluation right matters more than the headline algorithm.

Trusted digital learning

Verifiable credentials and secure learning ecosystems — an active research strand alongside our education work.
